A vintage black Raku ware bowl.

Hand-formed, not thrown. The surface shifts between soft reflection and near matte black depending on the light — irregularities from the firing still close to the surface.

“Ichi-Raku, Ni-Hagi, San-Karatsu.” An old phrase from the Japanese tea world — the order in which tea masters have preferred their matcha bowls for centuries. Not a strict hierarchy; more an observation about how each responds to tea, to touch, and to time. Raku tends to be spoken about on its own.

Raku is low-fired — porous, lighter in hand than its form first suggests.

A wooden box was made for this piece and appears in the photos, though it is damaged and will not be included. The bowl itself remains in excellent condition.
