Description

Kutani ware is known for its gosai palette — red, yellow, green, purple, and blue used in combination. The outlines are drawn in gossu, a black pigment. The overglaze sits slightly raised above the surface, giving the pattern texture as well as color.

The gold catches first. The darker areas in between keep the composition from tipping toward ornate. Detailed, but still controlled. A plate that holds its own on a shelf even when there's nothing on it.

Kutani mark on the reverse.
