MIJIN-KARAKUSA PATTERN NAMASU PLATE
Description
The pattern is called mijin-karakusa — "tiny arabesque." The blue is bero-ai — a Prussian blue introduced from Europe in the Edo era, and the color that came to define everyday Japanese porcelain.
Namasu plates were originally made for small dishes like pickles — still easy to use now: fruit, sweets, or something on your table. The scale is small, but once placed on a table it carries more weight than expected.
Found at an antique fair in Tokyo, sitting near the edge of a crowded shelf. Among dozens of similar plates, this was the one that kept pulling the eye back.
